Technical background

Strainers in pipelines have the following function:

  1. Preventing faults and avoiding damaging of existing plant components;
  2. Cleaning of the flowing medium.

These two primary tasks are valid in all areas of application – regardless whether the media are:

  • Hot water (district heating systems)
  • Cold water (Cooling Systems, municipal applications)
  • Hydrocarbons (pumping of oil, petroleum, LNG/LPG)
  • Acids or alkalis (chemical plants).

Generally, all these tasks will be fulfilled by all commercially available filter types, however with high energy intensity and short maintenance intervals. Further reducible costs arise from shutdown and cleaning of the same.

The frequency of maintenance is depending on the amount of dirt in a plant and the duration of cleaning in relation to the individual operating conditions (DN, temperature, etc.). Hence, no universal values of maintenance cost can be determined, albeit a relative comparison between different filter types at the same operating conditions can be done.

 Overall analysis and solution approach

Annually, minimum € 500 Mio. additional cost of pump energy arises in German plants!

This is incurred through the installation of traditional strainers (ζ = 3 ... 7 and higher).

In addition, less energy-efficient equipment is added daily.

This situation is remedied by using the W-Filter with its ζ = 0,7 - 2,3:

efficient + effective = economical
